The Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi announced Tuesday after talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that both hoped that Lufthansa will find a collaborative agreement with Alitalia.
Lufthansa was one of the foreign airlines courted by an alliance of Italian investors who made a takeover offer to acquire Alitalia, currently in bankruptcy.
Investors hope to conclude the acquisition by the end of the month, and a foreign company could join the project as a partner. The name of Air France-KLM was also cited for the relief of the Italian company in difficulty.
"We talked about Alitalia and the Chancellor and I are in complete agreement to look favorably of the possibility of a collaboration between Alitalia and Lufthansa, and we hope that this will happen" Berlusconi said during a joint press conference in Trieste.
Italian airline (CAI), an alliance of investors led by the chairman of Piaggio Roberto Colaninno, presented on October 31 its final offer of takeover of Alitalia. The CAI has reaffirmed its intention to inject one billion euros in the company to rid itself of unprofitable assets.
Last week, a series of surprise strikes had forced Alitalia to cancel numerous flights. This was separate movements of the call for a series of one-day strikes from November 25, launched by five unions representing the crew of Alitalia and trade. They protest against job cuts and reducing the number of services provided in the plan for resumption of the company.
